Green Party Leader Recognizes the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with a Call for Investments in Harm Prevention

25 NOVEMBER 2015

Fredericton – November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and marks the beginning of a sixteen day call to action by UNiTE to End Violence Against Women. The theme of the movement this year is Prevention.

“Sixty-five per cent of women seeking shelter in transition houses were witness to domestic violence as children,” said David Coon, MLA for Fredericton South and Leader of the Green Party of New Brunswick. “We need to invest today in support for the children who have observed abuse in their homes to break the cycle of violence against women.”

The government will be releasing an options report in the coming weeks as one of the final steps in its Strategic Program Review to find $500-600 million in savings.

“If this review is to be truly strategic, it will look for ways to prevent harm to women today and in the future,” said Coon, “and women will reap these benefits for years to come.”
