Fredericton – David Coon, MLA for Fredericton South and Leader of the Green Party of New Brunswick issued the following statement in recognition of World Aids Day on Thursday, December 1.

“Today is a day for nations and communities across the globe to come together to re-commit to HIV prevention. This year, the theme is Hands Up for #HIV Prevention

I’d like to recognize the many non-profit organizations, their staff, and volunteers who continue their work in helping prevent the spread of HIV in New Brunswick. These individuals and groups also do vital work supporting those living with HIV-AIDS who still face significant stigma.

New Brunswick has one of the lowest rates of infection in Canada. Other parts of the world continue to face great challenges associated with HIV-AIDS. The local chapter of Grandmothers helping Grandmothers raise funds for grandmothers in Africa who are raising their grandchildren, orphaned by AIDS.

We must continue the work to prevent the spread of HIV and confront the stigma faced by those living with HIV-AIDS. ”
